A Beginners Guide To Craigslist

by kevin03

Even though Craigslist has been on the go one way or another since 1995, there are some individuals who still have absolutely no idea how to use it. These people are surely missing a fantastic opportunity to belong to a continually evolving on line community. This community provides a superb resource for retrieving information, getting a job, meeting and dating other people, buying and selling goods on line and discussing important topics with others. In this article you will find a brief introduction to the main sections on Craigslist.

The Community Section

This section of Craigslist is extremely useful if you want to find local information such as events and activities taking place, so this is clearly the place to take a look at if you need to know about anything that is happening in your own area. They also have a local lost and found section too.

The Discussion Forums

An ideal place to say what you think about something and be given the opportunity to answer questions and share information with others. In order for the user to find other people who share the same interests, this section is split into categories, some of which you have to log in to post whilst it is not necessary on others.

The For Sale Section

This speaks for itself, this section is categorized and each sub section gives details of the type of item to be found in there. There is also an items wanted part to this section where requests can be made when users are looking for something particular. Some items listed in the for sale section do not require a fee to be paid. They may be free or available by bartering.

The Gigs Section

Along the lines of the jobs section these advertisements within the gigs section usually refer to one off opportunities and not to continuous work. An example of this would be an advertisement for volunteers to help out at a particular one day event, whereas regular and full time work positions would be featured in the jobs section.

The Housing Section

This section presents the user with various options in connection to lodging. Featuring available rentals, sublet opportunities, people looking for lodgers or house sharers, house and apartment exchanges, real estate sales, holiday lets, office and parking space rentals or sales and storage facilities.

The Jobs Section

This is by far the most detailed section on Craigslist. Broken down into several different categories enabling the user to look for vacancies within their chosen career with a choice or part time or full time, this section also offers telecommute and contract positions to users.

The Personals Section

This is where you can meet and form relationships both of a platonic and romantic nature. Restricted to users over the age of 18, this section has several categories, allowing for both heterosexuals and homosexuals to find possible dates.

The Resumes Section

This is the place where people looking for work can present their resumes. A catchy headline is a good way of standing out from the crowd in this section as it is not categorized for specific types of work being presented.

The Services Section

This is where service providers can place their ads for the services they have on offer. Advertisements are to be placed in the relevant categories but if there is no specific category the ad can be placed in the generic small business part of this section.

Craigslist: Understanding The Beast

Craigslist: Understanding The Beast

by 1529nix

The name Craig Newmark may not be familiar to many people, but his Web site Craigslist is known by almost every young adult with a computer. The company is the brainchild of Craig Newmark, and has become one of the most popular sites on the internet.

Craigslist is affordable unlike many of the major sites, and offers guru level results for the little guy in the internet marketing game. It is the ninth most visited site on the internet and gets more traffic than one of the giants in the industry, Amazon.

Started in San Francisco in 1995, Craigslist is perhaps the ultimate site for classified listings. The company was originally limited to the San Francisco area, with want ads, items to sell, and even personal ads. It generates income solely from help wanted ads, and offers postings of job advertisements at significantly lower cost than traditional print ads.

The costs are even lower than one of the leading career websites, Monster. For the most part, posting and reading ads is free. Their revenue is generated by people posting job ads at significantly below market rate.

The success of Craigslist has proven that both employers and employees want a cost-effective, easy way to fill openings in the job market. In July 2005, the company won the right to send more than 2 million classified ads into space (one light year away) after they won an ebay auction for broadcasting time from the deep space communications network.

Often described as an online community, it is a site where you can find jobs, housing, goods, services, romance, local activities, advice and lots more. It has a reputation for being a big, friendly community. One of the more popular sections, the “Best of Craigslist” includes a quirky collection of community rants that make interesting reading. One of the major contributions to the popularity of the website is the fact that all of the services are provided free, and it enables folks within the same community to liaise with each other.

Recently, there have still been no major changes to the usefulness or non-advertising nature of the site. They still have no banner ads, and are only charging for a few services to businesses. Jobs in the gigs section are often work for free opportunities, or scams advertising great jobs if one will take a course or pay a fee for job listings.

Craigslist will always be a winner when it comes to local classified advertising, simply because the operation is big enough, popular enough and cheap enough that it would be difficult for anyone else to compete. There is no question that the company has a formidable presence in the United States as far as classified advertising services are concerned, and this is mostly evident from the numerous criticisms it receives from the various rival newspapers who are competing for the same advertising dollar.

With over ten million new classified advertisements each month, Craigslist is the leading classifieds service in any medium. At its inception, and still today, it is a virtual smorgasbord of online offerings with thousands of listings organized by city and category.

This is a multi-billion dollar company that is currently nowhere near its potential as a business, which suits the founders just fine. This company is making us think about our business differently, primarily making us think about what the hot buttons are for this community, not only in terms of what people are buying and selling, but also in terms of what types of activities incite a community to come together. Newmark, the founder, says that Craigslist works because it gives people a voice, a sense of community trust and even intimacy.

How To Discover Hot Selling Items You Can Earn Extra Money With On EBay Or With Craigslist Ads!

How To Discover Hot Selling Items You Can Earn Extra Money With On EBay Or With Craigslist Ads!

by twinpeak

If you’re looking for hot selling items to earn extra money with on eBay or with free Craigslist ads or if you’re already selling on these sites, then here are some of my best tips and a few things you should know.

You hear all the time about the success people are having by finding and selling one or more items but you don’t know if you’ll have the same luck or not.

The old saying goes, “nothing ventured nothing gained” and I’ve used it many times for many ventures I’ve had. Doing nothing gets you nothing. Yes it takes a little work but you can do it. I’ve accidentally discovered many items myself not listed anywhere as “hot sellers.”

I’ve seen people list things like a few used lipsticks in a lot for a few dollars. This is a waste of time! Sure you MAY be able to sell a few of those items that way but your time is worth much more than that. You want to go for items that will make you enough profit. At least $20-$25 PROFIT- in your pocket - after fees and shipping on each item!

So if you’re just listing little things that gain you just a little profit it ’s not worth your time and energy. Focus on items that you’ll be listing on eBay or with Craigslist ads for more money and you’ll have more of a chance for a bigger profit. No fees with free Craigslist ads either!

I’ve found quite a few of the same timeless items that sell over an over. This is almost like having your own product.

Another tip - don’t waste your time on selling new items like electronics to earn extra money. The big boys are listing on eBay now and it ’s hard to compete with them. Yes there are exceptions like some items that you find new in a package but forget new electronics and any new popular items - there is too much competition.

Instead focus on one-of-a-kind items, tools, household equipment, office items, collectibles, shoes, some types of clothing, auto parts, etc. Think outside the box. Don’t go for the ‘hot seller’ lists. They may have too much competition. There are hundreds of possibilities. You may have to test over and over again.

Look around for about 10 items in your house, office and garage that you think people might use. You want to list at high prices so you get a good enough profit to earn extra money or to start up or set up a small business. It can be anything for this test. Then go to eBay to “advanced search” - use “all categories”. Check the search title and description box and show “completed listings”. Look for the green “sold” items.

Search for each one and see if there are a few other listings for it that have sold. If there are none, it may not be a good item to list or there may be no interest. If there are too many that may not be good either. But if you check enough items you’ll discover, even accidentally, ones that will work and make you more money. You can find these hot items over and over with a little effort.

Then type in the items on free Craigslist ads and see if there are any running. If there are a lot of ads then it may be a good item to sell there.

Once you become an expert on an item you can scan Craigslist and eBay and look for the item. It may be underpriced.

You can earn extra money or start up a small business and work from home and list, sell and ship the items you’ve discovered. You can make it a full time business as many have if you work at it. Make sure to try running free Craigslist ads also.

Craigslist Unclassified Marketing Success

Craigslist—Unclassified Marketing Success

by btdt1128

A somewhat controversial website from the web 2.0 point of view, Craigslist is used by thousands to market both websites and products. It has, however, had many forms over the past several years. Its most recent incarnation, complete with an interactive interface and a platform geared toward marketing, though, allows it to make a serious impact on your overall marketing efforts.

Founded in the mid-nineties by Craig Newmark, Craigslist ’s primary focus was the San Francisco area. These days, though, it serves more than four hundred and fifty different cities. With nearly nine billion page views every single month, it ’s certainly an avenue to consider in your overall marketing plan. From personal ads to job listings to services, no matter what your product line, there ’s a spot for you on Craigslist.

The Initial Craigslist Setup Process

Getting started at Craigslist is perhaps one of the easiest jobs you’ll ever have on your list of marketing tasks. Craigslist revolves around the idea of making posts to the website, all of which are then viewed by other individuals. To get started, all you really have to do to be able to post is confirm an e-mail address and fill in a security code in order to ensure that you are not a robot. There is no complicated profile to fill out, and there is very little work to do in order to build your account; it is simply a matter of posting material to the different areas of Craigslist.

Your Craiglist Marketing Plan

In many ways, Craigslist may be the most interesting part of your marketing plan. You literally have hundreds of marketing options on this site. If you’ve never stopped by before, it might help to understand the site itself. The whole website is a series of different posts people read. Posts separated by categories. For example, if you run a copywriting service, you could easily place a listing in the “Services” category. If you sell chainsaws, you could place a listing in the “for sale” category. Because there are subcategories within each larger category, finding a home for your post won’t be a problem.

The key to really being successful at Craigslist is combining the format of the website with creative thinking. You have to consider exactly how you can reach people in a way that melds within the format of the site. For example, if you are selling an e-book about how to make money online through writing articles for websites, you might consider placing a job post in the online writing section. After all, your ebook could one day lead to them finding the perfect job in that category. You can also advertise your e-book in the “for sale” sections, and perhaps have a promotional online meeting that you can advertise in the events section.

If you are interested in trying to get money through affiliate marketing, take a look at the “requested” section of Craigslist. Look for people who want what you’re selling and then e-mail them with an offer. If you sign up for an affiliate account at Amazon, you could potentially do this to everyone who posts provided that you can find what they are looking for on Amazon and send the link to them.

In most cases, however, it is really the things like advertising events and items for sale that bring people to your website. You do not have to be sly in order to bring people to your website this way. Be honest about what is available on your website, categorize your post appropriately, and you should see a terrific amount of traffic from Craigslist.

Using Craigslist As A Promotional Tool For Your Business

Using Craigslist As A Promotional Tool For Your Business

by kevin03

One excellent avenue for business promotion is Craigslist. Whether a person has a small part time business or a thriving business which has become a fulltime endeavor, Craigslist can help the business not only increase in popularity but its profits as well. In order to successfully promote a business on Craigslist, two components much be in place. The first includes reaching the target audience and the second is running a marketing campaign which is going to appeal to this target audience. This article will help show the reader how utilizing Craigslist can be used to grow a business by putting into place these two components.

Reaching Your Target Audience on Craigslist

It does not have to be difficult to promote a business on Craigslist. It is not really easier than promoting your business offline either. You may notice some similarities in promoting your business on Craigslist and promoting it offline. The main likeness is that the business promoter must do his or her research to find out just who the targeted audience is.

If your marketing campaign does not reach the intended audience, it does not matter how well thought out or innovative it was. That is why it is extremely important for those who are trying to promote their business on Craigslist to be sure that they get their ad under the proper heading so that their targeted audience will receive the intended message. Most of the posts on Craigslist are available free of charge except job listings in Los Angeles, New York City and the San Francisco Bay area as well as brokered housing listings in New York City. So it is that the small business owner can take advantage of the free postings on Craigslist to reach their target audience in multiple locations.

Consider a company that is offering moving services in Portland, Oregon. A small moving company that has just gotten started may want to take advantage of the free advertising available on Craigslist. In order to have the greatest opportunity to reach its target audience, the company should place a services offered posting under the labor and moving category for the counties in Portland in which the services are being offered. If they place the post in this manner, it is far more likely to reach an audience of those who are planning to move to another area in the county.

Additional benefits are also offered on Craigslist besides free postings. The most important benefit is a large audience. Over 4 billions readers view Craigslist every month. Having such a large audience, it makes it possible for posters to Craigslist to reach a large audience. However, be sure to categorize the advertisement correctly to ensure that your ad reaches the largest target audience possible.

Effectively Marketing on Craigslist

It is not so different to market effectively on Craigslist as it is to market effectively in other forms of print media. If you are going to conduct a marketing campaign on Craigslist, a very important element that you will need is professionally written copy that appeals directly to the target audience. It would be a good idea to hire a freelance writer who is skilled in writing sales copy for this job. The business owner might be very knowledgeable about his or her business, but does he or she have the necessary skills to convey the purpose of the business to others? The target audience may need to be convinced to visit a website and make a purchase, request additional information about products or services or even visit a traditional store.

The final component to market effectively is to place the ad in the correct section of Craigslist. The ad must not only be categorized correctly, but it must be placed in the proper physical location. Products or services which are just offered in a limited area such as a specific city or county should be advertised in these exact locations. For those who offer products by way of a website, they may want to consider placing an ad in all of the locations to which they are willing for their products to be shipped.

Remember that Craigslist is a very good place to advertise, but you are always going to have people who want something for nothing. Do not be discouraged by all of the “no shows” that your advertisement pulls in. Out of the thousands who try to use Craigslist for their own selfish purposes, you get many honest and upright people out there who are just trying to make some extra money.

Why Advertise on Craigslist?

Why Advertise on Craigslist?

by sas_vwcampy

Advertising on Craigslist is worthwhile for just about any business offering products or services. Whether these products are offered through ecommerce websites or physical stores, the business owners can see financial gains through advertising on Craigslist. Firstly unlike other advertising opportunities there is very little risk involved in posting on Craigslist. With the exception of job postings and housing postings in specific markets, advertising is free on Craigslist. Users are asked to agree to the terms of service of the community and are expected to follow specific guidelines when posting advertisements but there are no financial obligations to those placing advertisements on Craigslist. This means those who post advertisements do not have to be concerned with whether or not the advertisement they place will meet their expectations in terms of sales generated.

Reaching Potential Customers on Craigslist
Another reason why posting advertisements for products or services on Craigslist is so worthwhile is the likelihood of reaching a large audience of potential customers. A review of the Craigslist fact sheet reveals pertinent information regarding the amount of traffic the website receives. According to this information Craigslist receives approximately four billion page views each month with ten million people using Craigslist each month. From these statistics it is clear that advertisements placed on Craiglist are likely to receive at least some attention from potential clients.

With so many visitors using Craigslist each month the advertising possibilities are limitless, however, there are no guarantee any of these visitors will be interested in your products or services. Like any marketing campaign, your advertisements on Craigslist must be intriguing, informative and in a location where you will reach your target audience.

Finding Your Target Audience on Craigslist
We??™ve already discussed the number of visitors using Craigslist each month but the key to taking advantage of these numbers is to target your advertising in a way aimed at reaching your target audience as opposed to a wide audience of individuals who have no specific interest in your products or services. It is much more worthwhile to reach a small audience of those with a keen interest in your products or services than to reach a much larger audience of those who are not interested. Those who have an interest in your products or services are your target audience.

The key to reaching your target audience on Craigslist is placing your advertisement in the most appropriate locations. Craigslist has a specific section for businesses to advertise their services. This section is broken down into a number of categories. Those who are in the business of computer repair would be wise to place their advertisement in the computer section as opposed to the automotive section because individuals looking for computer help will naturally migrate to the computer section. It may sometimes be appropriate to place an advertisement in more than one section. This is acceptable as long as it does not cross the line to spamming the section.

If there is not a specific section for the products or services offered by your business there are a couple of options. Business owners can place an advertisement in the section for small business advertisements where it might be found by those doing a search in this section. Alternately the business owner can contact Craigslist to suggest the addition of a new category. They might be willing to oblige if they believe this category warrants an addition.

The Difference between Advertising and Spamming
Advertising on Craigslist is one thing but spamming is quite another. Placing an advertisement in an appropriate section of Craigslist is acceptable; however, placing the same advertisement in nearly every section of Craigslist websites for a number of different geographical regions is considered spam. Spam is ineffective for a number of reasons. First of all potential customers who see a particular advertisement in a number of different locations are likely to recognize the spamming techniques and be less inclined to patronize this business. Also, if Craigslist detects the practice of spamming they may delete all of the postings and could potentially ban advertisements from the individual in the future.

Advertising Campaigns And Craigslist

Advertising Campaigns And Craigslist

by kevin03

Craigslist provides a worthwhile media for an advertising campaign for any business offering their services and products. Any business owner can appreciate the financial gains of advertising on Craigslist, whether their services and products are available through real stores or e commerce websites.

There is little risk involved in advertising on Craigslist, unlike other forms of advertising media. Advertising is free on Craigslist, with the exception of posting for housing and jobs in in specific markets. Users must agree with the terms of service for Craigslist and must follow their specific guidelines while placing advertisements; however, it is free to use. This means you do not have to concern yourself financially to place your business advertisements or meeting potentials in terms of sales generated.

Reach Potential Consumers on Craigslist

You can reach a multitude of potential consumers when placing advertisements for services and products on Craigslist, as it is worthwhile. Craigslist provides a fact sheet for review that reveals significant information concerning the websites flow of internet traffic. Craigslist enjoys nearly four billion page views each month, while ten million people a month use Craigslist. These statistics clearly show that advertisements placed on Craigslist receive some attention by potential consumers.

The advertising possibilities are limitless with so many people visiting Craigslist each month, however there is no guarantee any of those visitors will find interest in your service or product. As with any marketing campaign, your advertisements must be informative and appealing while being placed in the best location on Craigslist so that you reach your target viewers.

Locating your Craigslist Target Viewers

It is essential that your advertising have the proper structure to reach your target viewers as opposed to a large audience of internet users who hold not interest in your services or products. It is in your best interest to reach a small audience of those individuals who do find interest in your services and products, since those with an interest are your target viewers.

To reach your target viewers on Craigslist you must place your advertisements in the most appropriate locations. There are specific sections for businesses to place their advertisements on Craigslist. There are a number of categories in this section. A computer repair business would be wise to place advertisements in the computer section rather than the automotive section since anyone looking for help with computers will naturally look there first. Sometimes it is appropriate to place advertisements in other sections as well. As long as it does not cross the line into spamming the section, it is acceptable to do so.

You have a couple of options when there is no specific section for your advertisements. You could place your advertisement in the small business section where it is easy find while doing a search of this section. On the other hand, feel free to contact Craigslist to make suggestions of additional categories. If they believe the category warrants an addition, they may be willing to accommodate the section.

Advertising and Spamming There is a Difference

Craigslist provides for advertising, but not for spamming. Placing an advertisement in the correct section on Craigslist is fine, however you cannot place the same advertisement in every section of Craigslist as this is spamming, no matter the geographical region. There are numerous reasons why spamming is unproductive.

When potential consumers see spam, they know what it is and will more than likely not patronize your business. When Craigslist finds someone practicing the technique of spamming, all the advertisements are deleted and they may very well ban that individual for their website. This means spamming is really a big waste of your valuable time and not worthwhile in the least.

Craigslist Has Mass Appeal To Online Classified Users
By : Craig Bradburn
On the visual appeal scale, the craigslist website is mediocre at best. But in terms of sheer mass usability it’s off the scale. craigslist is an extremely powerful classified advertising tool used by millions of visitors each year. Like the wayward traveler tuning into a cities radio stations for news, It tunes in to the classified happenings of cities around the globe.

Craigslist was founded in San Francisco by Craig Newmark inthe mid 1990’s. A small and personal organization, craiigslist operates with a relatively tiny staff reminiscent of a small town newspaper. From this small cadre of dedicated individuals, it provides a classified service for people around the globe. Craigslist has a simple approach to advertising, bridge the gap between the haves and the have not’s. The no nonsense approach has endeared craigslist to users of all walks of life. The standardized interface is the key to the usability. A list of links always directs users to the same categories of classified advertising.

Between geographic locations, the only perceptible difference you see in craigslist is the location banner showing what city the site is “tuned” to. Simply select a city of interest and it provides connections to people looking to sell, rent or buy or what other activities the user may be interested in for that specific area.

Because of It’s content rich approach to supplying information to the masses, it enjoys one of the most visited sites around the globe for classified advertising. Is Using Craigslist Overrated?

Is Using Craigslist Overrated?
By : Aaron Aldama
Are you using Craigslist to advertise for your home business? If so you are not going to achieve the results you are looking for. Yes Craigslist does have an Alexa ranking of 8 and yes Craigslist does get boat loads of traffic to it’s site. But advertising on Craigslist is not worth your time and if you are paying 25 bucks to advertise in certain cities, I will show you why it is not worth your money. With that being said if you are going to post your home business ads on free classified ad sites, Craigslist is the best.

You shouldn’t even bother to post to any other free classified ad sites besides Craigslist, that is if you are going to post on free classified ad sites. There are many other ways to effectively market for your home business. One other thing to think about, if you are solely using Craigslist as a way to advertise your home business, the chances of you building a successful home business are slim to none.

First off most people posting on Craigslist in the small biz section are just posting their own home business ads up. They are not looking to join up with any other home business owners. So yes posting an ad on Craigslist is very easy but it is also very ineffective.

Your ad will most likely not end up helping you build your business. In order to be effective on Craigslist you must post your ads massively and to every city possible. Great problem solved, right? Nope, Craigslist has spiders who search for spammers and these spiders ban and flag the ads. What are some of the things which can get you flagged on Craigslist? Well posting the same ad to multiple cities can and will get your ads flagged and removed. Next posting multiple ads with the same IP address will get you banned permanently.

Meaning any ad you post on Craigslist will get flagged before it even goes up. This happens if you spam with the same IP address, that IP address is banned for life. And it’s hard to know if the Craigslist spiders consider your ads to be spam but if they do you are done.

Another issue you will have to deal with when posting to Craigslist is other home business owners flagging your ads for no reason. Somewhere in their twisted minds they believe more people will see their ads if they flag and remove other home business owner’s ads.

Now true posting an ad on Craigslist here and there is easy but it is not effective. And if you are posting ads like “Earn 6 Figures Overnight”, most people are tuning those types of ads out. Now what I am suggesting will take more work but the payoff will be 100 times what you could ever imagine.

Why not create your own website and learn how to market it effectively online, instead of posting a couple of ads to Craigslist. Imagine having your website located at the top of the search engines for a keyword like “home business”. How powerful would your business be if you could land that spot? Very powerful. There are plenty of keywords to go around. That is just one effective way of building your home business besides posting on Craigslist.

Here is one thing I can guarantee you. The people making over 6 figure incomes from their home business are not using Craigslist to market their business.
